Village Wide Spring Garage Sales

The Village will hold their annual Garage Sale starting on Friday May 2nd - May 3rd, 2025

Village Clean-up

The Public Works Department will begin picking up YOUR unwanted treasures on May 5, 2025.  Please be respectful of this service offered solely to Village residents. Do not invite non residents to bring their unwanted treasures in for the Village Pick up. Public Works will only pick up once at your residence. Please ensure that all items are out on Monday, May 6th for pickup.   A New Rule:  limit of two (2) toilets per household will be picked up and they must be busted up and boxed for Public Works.

Safety guidelines are as follows:

All items must be in either a bag, box, carton, or some type of container.

If the “pickers” go through your items and scatter them across your yard or ditch it is your responsibility to pick up these items and place them back in a container for our crew to remove them. Our crew will not pick up household garbage, feces, electronics, appliances, paints, tires, and landscape wastes just to name a few.   A complete list is at the office of unacceptable items given to us by the Sangamon Valley Landfill. If any of these items are in your pile, they will be left by Public Works and you will need to dispose of them yourself. An example of unacceptable items are waste oil, tires, batteries, yard/landscape waste, appliances, electronics, televisions, fluorescent light bulbs, septic tank waste, bulk liquids, paint, medical/hospital waste, flammable or volatile substances, explosives/ammunition, regulated infectious waste, hazardous wastes, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), radioactive materials just to name a few.

The Village will pick up mattresses and box springs if they are in a Village approved bag.  Please have your items ready and remember that if you have a mattress they need to be in separate bags for the crew to be picked up.

Cops N Bobbers

June 14, 2025 -  9:00 am until 12:00 pm  All age children are welcome to join the Southern View Police Officers for a day of fishing in our pond at the Southern View Park. The Cops and Kids Foundation created this program “to connect police officers and the youth of their communities” “Officers work side by side with kids, helping them bait, cast, hook and release fish all while bonding and learning that they are not so different from each other after all.” “Fishing teaches patience, ingenuity, preparation and humility. This is a great way for the kids of the village to meet our officers and fish. The Village will provide everything necessary to fish, just bring yourself for a fun afternoon at the park.  Download the registration form under documents/forms above and send in to the Police Department.

Veterans Day Banquet

Veterans Day is a day to thank our Veterans for their sacrifices. Southern View sponsors a reception for our local Veterans to get together and swap stories. We have hosted breakfasts, luncheons,  and dinners in celebration of our local veterans.   The Village is very excited about doing something GRAND this year to show our appreciation for the veterans sacrifices and those of their families.   As always, if you have not done so already, call 217-529-3352 or email office@southernview.us your name, address, branch of service and years served so that we may honor you for all you have sacrificed in serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Village Neighborhood Watch

The Village Neighborhood Watch gets together a few times a year.   Guest Speakers, information on local happenings and getting to know your neighbors are a big part of each meeting. Each meeting is conducted at the Southern View Municipal Building.  Please look under the Contact us tab for the Neighborhood Watch calendar.

Large item pick-up and drop- off services now available for Sangamon County residents

Monday, October 02, 2023

SANGAMON COUNTY, IL – Sangamon County has announced the start of the Large Item Pick-up Program, catering exclusively to residents living outside the City of Springfield Corporate Limits. Beginning today, October 2nd, the new program allows eligible residents to schedule pick-up or drop-off of large items not typically accommodated by regular waste management services. The Sangamon County Board unanimously approved the partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County at its September Board meeting.

County Board Member and Chairman of the Public Health Committee, James Schackmann, says, “The Large Item Pick-up Program meets County residents’ unique needs by providing a convenient disposal option of large unneeded items. In addition to assisting some of our more rural residents, the new program will contribute to overall County cleanliness.”

All eligible residents qualify for free scheduled residential curbside pick-up of up to six items per calendar year. Pick-ups can be divided into two transactions.

Eligible items include furniture, appliances, mattresses, and other bulky household objects. Restricted items include hazardous materials, tires, TVs, and other electronic goods. A complete list of eligible and restricted items can be found at SangamonIL.Gov/Habitat.

Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County provides Springfield residents with an identical large item pick-up program. The City of Springfield program is unchanged by the new partnership with the County; Springfield residents should continue to use the service as they have in the past.

Upon scheduling a pick-up, residents will receive detailed instructions and guidelines for preparing their items for collection. The program prioritizes environmentally friendly disposal methods, including recycling, repurposing, or appropriate disposal at designated facilities, in alignment with Sangamon County’s commitment to sustainable waste management practices.

Residents must schedule pick-ups and drop-offs in advance by contacting Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County at 217-523-2710, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. or by scheduling service online at habitatsangamon.vonigo.com/external/.
