SANGAMON COUNTY, IL – Sangamon County has announced the start of the Large Item Pick-up Program, catering exclusively to residents living outside the City of Springfield Corporate Limits. Beginning today, October 2nd, the new program allows eligible residents to schedule pick-up or drop-off of large items not typically accommodated by regular waste management services. The Sangamon County Board unanimously approved the partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County at its September Board meeting.
County Board Member and Chairman of the Public Health Committee, James Schackmann, says, “The Large Item Pick-up Program meets County residents’ unique needs by providing a convenient disposal option of large unneeded items. In addition to assisting some of our more rural residents, the new program will contribute to overall County cleanliness.”
All eligible residents qualify for free scheduled residential curbside pick-up of up to six items per calendar year. Pick-ups can be divided into two transactions.
Eligible items include furniture, appliances, mattresses, and other bulky household objects. Restricted items include hazardous materials, tires, TVs, and other electronic goods. A complete list of eligible and restricted items can be found at SangamonIL.Gov/Habitat.
County Board Member Annette Fulgenzi said, “By offering this service, we are empowering residents to dispose of their large items properly, reducing illegal dumping, and maintaining the aesthetic appeal of our County.”
Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County provides Springfield residents with an identical large item pick-up program. The City of Springfield program is unchanged by the new partnership with the County; Springfield residents should continue to use the service as they have in the past.
“We are glad to see the Large Item Pick-up Program extending to the entire County,” said Colleen Stone, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County. “Our program has been very successful within the City of Springfield, and I believe all residents will benefit from this service.”
Upon scheduling a pick-up, residents will receive detailed instructions and guidelines for preparing their items for collection. The program prioritizes environmentally friendly disposal methods, including recycling, repurposing, or appropriate disposal at designated facilities, in alignment with Sangamon County’s commitment to sustainable waste management practices.
Residents must schedule pick-ups and drop-offs in advance by contacting Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County at 217-523-2710, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. or by scheduling service online at habitatsangamon.vonigo.com/external/.

Southern View Police Department does not have Certified Technicians so Listed Below are 3 locations available to all for free car seat checks by certified technicians
Sept. 23 is National Seat Check
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for Child Passenger Safety Week, which runs Sept. 17-23, to help ensure the safety of young children traveling in our community. The annual safety week is capped off with National Seat Check Saturday, when parents and caregivers can get free seat checks and instruction on how to correctly install and use the right car seats for their kids.
“Most parents are dedicated to doing their best for their kids, so they may be surprised to find out their children aren’t as safe as possible in their vehicle,” said Chief Maki. “Please don’t wait for a crash to find out if your child’s seat is installed correctly. Let a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician give you peace of mind.”
The event, which will take place at:
Sangamon County Health Department 2833 South Grand Ave E Springfield on Sept. 16th, from 9am to Noon
Christian County Sheriff’s Office 301 W. Franklin Taylorville on Sept. 20th, from 5pm to 8pm
Green Hyundi 1200 S Dirksen Pkwy, Springfield Sept. 23rdfrom 10am to 1pm
They are three of 92 sponsored throughout the state by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The latest research from NHTSA shows that 46% of car seats are misused. Common issues are children being in the wrong type of car seat for their age and size, and car seats being installed improperly — both of which leave children vulnerable to injury in a crash.
Using age- and size-appropriate car seats and installing them correctly are the best ways to reduce crash fatalities among children. According to NHTSA, more than a third of children 12 and younger who died in crashes in 2021 in cars, pickups, vans and SUVs were unbuckled. The No. 1 rule: Never let your children ride unbuckled — not even on a short trip.
The campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds from NHTSA administered by IDOT.

Drive merry, bright and sober this holiday season
Southern View, Illinois — With the holidays in full swing, Southern View Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation to remind motorists about the dangers of impaired driving. From Dec. 16 through Jan. 2, law enforcement across Illinois will step up enforcement efforts with a high visibility “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High. Get a DUI.” traffic safety campaign.
“We want everyone in our communities to enjoy the holidays without worrying about the dangers of impaired drivers,” said Chief Rick Wiese. “During the campaign, you can expect to see extra safety patrols. We will show zero tolerance for alcohol- and drug-impaired driving to help ensure everyone makes it to and from their holiday festivities safely.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, in 2020, a total of 11,654 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver. On average, more than 10,000 people were killed each year from 2016 to 2020, with one person killed in an alcohol-related crash every 45 minutes in 2020.
Before the holiday fun begins, make a plan for a sober ride home and remember these tips.
• Designate a sober driver or make a plan to use public transportation or a ride-sharing service to get home safely.
• If you see an impaired driver on the road, pull over and contact the Southern View Police Department at 217-753-6666
• Have a friend who is about to drive impaired? Take the keys away and make arrangements to get them home safely. They’ll thank you later.
• Always buckle up!
The holiday enforcement campaign is administered by IDOT with federal highway safety funds managed by NHTSA.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Southern View Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to remind motorists to “Drop It and Drive.”
“Texting while driving puts everyone on the road at risk by distracting a driver visually, manually and cognitively,” said Chief Wiese. “During Distracted Driving Awareness Month, we’re working to increase awareness of these dangers and encourage all motorists to give driving their full attention.”
At a time when traffic fatalities are on the rise in Illinois and across the country, Southern View Police Department is committed to reducing the traffic crashes caused by distractions like texting or talking on a cell phone.
Motorists can expect to see increased patrols and enforcement zones the entire month of April. Southern View Police Department will be ticketing drivers who text or use their cell phones while driving.
